DAM SAFETY
(IWDS 2025)
21st - 23rd Feb 2025
Overview of Workshop
India ranks third globally with about 6,000 large dams, underscoring the critical importance of dam safety and management. The Second International Workshop on Dam Safety (IWDS 2025) is envisioned as a continuation of the successful IWDS 2024, building on the solid foundation laid to tackle key challenges in dam safety and resilience. To further strengthen expertise in dam safety, TIH-IITG, in collaboration with Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar, will organize this workshop from 21st – 23rd February, 2025.
IWDS 2025 will bring dam professionals and experts from various inter-related disciplines within India and worldwide. Expanding on last year’s discussions, IWDS 2025 will focus on providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of dam safety in India, addressing the challenges and opportunities for improvement. The workshop will showcase advanced geophysical techniques and the use of underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) for effective dam health assessment. It will also facilitate indepth discussions on the latest rehabilitation techniques, sedimentation management strategies, and the development of robust emergency action plans. Additionally, IWDS 2025 will serve as a platform for professionals from diverse fields to exchange ideas, share experiences, and collaborate on innovative solutions to enhance dam safety. Through these objectives, the workshop seeks to advance the field of dam safety by integrating cutting-edge technologies and fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration, ultimately equipping participants with the knowledge and tools to address the complex challenges facing the sector
The IWDS 2025 will feature Plenary, Technical, and Industry Sessions. Eminent dam safety professionals will deliver valuable presentations during the Plenary Sessions. The Technical Sessions will include presentations covering various facets of dam safety, such as advanced geophysical techniques, the innovative use of underwater ROVs for dam health assessments, and cutting-edge rehabilitation techniques. Key issues like morphological impacts, sedimentation, seepage, flash floods, and debris accumulation will also be addressed. The participants will experience areal-world dam monitoring and rehabilitation scenarios during the field visit. Additionally, live demonstrations of the latest dam health monitoring equipment will be conducted. National and overseas organizations will showcase contemporary developments in technologies, construction materials, products, instrumentation, and services in an exhibition at the venue. Several international experts and organizations of repute have agreed to participate, ensuring a diverse and enriching experience.
Brief Overview of TIH-IITG and IWDS 2024
The Technology Innovation Hub (TIH) at IIT Guwahati has been established under the National Mission for Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. TIH-IITG focuses on technologies for underwater exploration and related fields and is committed to promoting world-class technology, product development, and research innovation to enhance safety and resilience in vital sectors.
In alignment with its mandate, TIH-IITG organized the First International Workshop on Dam Safety (IWDS 2024) from June 27-29, 2024, at IIT Guwahati, taking a significant step toward addressing pressing challenges in dam safety. Bringing together experts, practitioners, and policymakers from academia, industry, and government, the workshop facilitated valuable exchanges on risk mitigation, emergency action planning, and innovative safety strategies. The event highlighted the pressing need for stronger capacity building in dam safety, inspiring TIH-IITG to organise a certification program on dam break analysis and EAP along with a continuation of the international workshop series. These initiatives aim to equip professionals with the specialized skills essential for advancing dam safety standards across the sector.
Importance of the Program
Dam safety and effective emergency planning are vital for minimizing risks associated with potential dam failures, protecting lives, infrastructure, and ecosystems. The certification program aims to deepen participants’ understanding of dam break analysis, flood modelling, and Emergency Action Plan (EAP) formulation. This will enable attendees to develop the skills needed for informed decision-making, proactive risk management, and improved disaster response strategies in dam safety.
Target Audience
Objectives of the Certification Program
- To provide a thorough understanding of dam safety principles and the various emergencies associated with dam failures.
- To equip participants with practical skills in flood inundation mapping using tools like HEC-RAS, and highlight the role of remote sensing and GIS.
- To guide participants through the process of developing and implementing effective Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), including key components and strategies.
- To analyse case studies to learn from both successful and failed EAPs, fostering discussion and collaborative learning.
- To promote interactive group discussions that facilitate the sharing of insights and experiences among participants.
Through these objectives, attendees will develop the skills and knowledge essential for implementing effective safety measures in dam management and emergency preparedness. All topics will be covered in depth to ensure a thorough mastery of each component.
